Months before the big day, my buddy Rory hits me up: “We’re throwing a triathlon up at Mugie—if you’re in, let me know.” At the time, I was criss crosing to different parts of Kenya on various photo assignment, and I was mentally fatigued. I was having what we call a creative block. I knew I needed a reset.
Fast-forward to the eve of the race—I’m behind the wheel, heading mid north to the wild beauty of Mugie Conservancy. I roll in a day early, eager to breathe in the fresh air, soak up the scenery, and start picturing the epic shots I could capture. The energy was already building.
I arrive just in time to get spectators and triathlete sign in for the event
while some were are ready to retire for the night
one wandered through the dusk
others tore off on a wild ride in the back of a bucky.
Signed off the day with this shot, tomorrow, it’s game time!
Woke up to this fire sunrise at Mugie Conservancy
its D-day and more triathletes begin to trickle in
after signing in, they are all set
Nick from Jaribu Outdoors making sure the mount bikes are in top shape
gear prep
swim check to acclimatise the body….
this is how you know a champ
Rory walked the triathletes through the course — covering terrain, the start line, timing checkpoints, transition zones, and the finish line…
timers are set and off they go
750 meters open water swim at Mugie Dam
first out of the water
first woman out of the water
off he goes for a 20km cycle
Rangers on stand by to keep all safe
first one back from the 20km bike ride
off he goes for a 5km run
Second cyclist to complete 20km
And here comes the champion, the winner of the 5km triathlon run!
I considered myself fit… until these guys redefined fitness right before my eyes!
nothin could break his spirit not even a flat. He was all in till the end
it was all celebration when triathletes crossed the finish line
Next up was young adults segment
All eyes on TeamTriFit, calculating the results as excitement builds for the winner’s announcement!
and the winners are….
see you in the next Mugie triathlon.
